Arriving three years after Sweet Silence, her first album sung entirely in English, German indie electronic chanteuse Barbara Morgenstern's Doppelstern is a collaborative album touching on various aspects of her sound, from blippy electro-pop to more ornately orchestrated compositions. Neo-classical artists such as Hauschka and Jacaszek contribute dramatic piano-driven pieces, with Jacaszek's "Den Kommenden Morgen" also featuring ominous, whispering choral vocals that seem like they're evoking some sort of cult ritual. While most of the songs are sung in German, a few of her duet partners lead songs in English, such as Monika Enterprise label boss Gudrun Gut, who slinks around "Too Much," and Corey Dargel, whose "No One Nowhere Cares" sounds like a more atmospheric version of Morgenstern's earlier sound marked with primitive drum machines. The album's poppiest moment is "Übermorgen," a glimmering chillwave cut featuring Robert Lippok and Justus Köhncke. Lucrecia Dalt collaboration "Gleich Ist Gleicher Als Gleich" is far more murky and abstract. "Facades," a mostly instrumental track featuring Canadian cellist Julia Kent, seems primed to soundtrack a stormy drama film or television series. On "Lost in a Fiction," Morgenstern and Richard Davis sweetly harmonize "take away your expectations of what you want me to be," and Doppelstern demonstrates Morgenstern's resistance to being pigeonholed or settling into predictability.

Muzycznych dowodów rzeczowych, przez 16 lat artystycznego bytowania nagromadziło się sześć – ostatni z nich, album Sweet Silence Barbara wydała w czerwcu zeszłego roku. Na wszystkich jej wydawnictwach znajdziemy wspólny mianownik – kobiece spojrzenie na melancholię, nostalgię poprzez wrażliwość muzyki elektronicznej, nawiązującej zarówno do krautrocka, jak i electro-popu. 特に銘記しておく曲
　全曲がハイクオリティなので、個別に特記する必要がない。どの曲から聴き始めても洩れなく至福に到達。
　むしろ、銘記することによってその他の曲が忘却されかねないことを避けたい。
　……と言っておきながら何だが、M-5・M-12それぞれの終盤はそのなかでも更に別格。
 

Barbara Morgenstern entwickelte sich von der charmanten Wohnzimmer-Musikerin (hier mit der ehemaligen Cassette “Enter The Partyzone” als Bonus CD gewürdigt), die sogar zu irgendwie verpatzten Tourdaten im Genervtsein super-sympathisch wirkte zum erfreulicherweise nicht gleich auf Hochglanzprospekten Aushängeschild (wider Willen?) neuer Berliner Popmusik (“Come to Berlin”). Ganz nebenbei und ihr wahrscheinlich auch viel wichtiger probierte sie immer wieder Neues aus, berichtete schön früh, dass das Klavier für die Komposition ihrer Songs basal sei. Und nahm später ein Duett mit wohl nicht nur ihrem Held Robert Wyatt auf (“Camouflage”). Frau Morgenstern blieb Frau Morgenstern und scheute sich dennoch nicht, Mini-Hits wie “The Operator”‘ herauszuhauen‘. Jetzt mal alles kompiliert hier, ergänzt um drei neue Songtracks und einen neuen Mix vom schönen “Der Augenblick”. 13 Jahre BM, zeitvergangen, (...).

As far as I can tell, “Reich & Berühmt” is sung in German except for a line in English. Understandably as a non-German speaker, the English line is the one that catches my ear: “Dance the night away if you want to be part of it.” I have no sense of the line’s context, but I’m intrigued by the decision to have that particular sentiment sung in another language, and wonder if it is somehow intended for the segment of Morgenstern’s audience who speak English but cannot understand German. Either way, this is not really a dancing song, but instead something more melancholy and lost in its own head. It’s not “part of it,” but removed, aloof, and physically and/or emotionally removed from the room full of dancing people.

This is very finely carpented pop, though „pop“ in it’s most nominal sense, a sort of classicism in excile.
